West El Prado Blvd Faces Daily Lane Closures for Water System Work

Drivers on West El Prado Boulevard should prepare for daily lane closures beginning Thursday, July 30, as the Tampa Water Department undertakes maintenance on the area's water distribution system. The closures, affecting both the outside westbound and outside eastbound lanes between South Waverly, are expected to continue through Monday.

The temporary traffic disruptions are a direct result of essential upkeep needed to maintain the integrity and reliability of the city's water supply infrastructure, according to the Tampa Water Department. This type of work is crucial for preventing potential issues like pipe bursts or service interruptions that can arise from aging infrastructure.

This maintenance aligns with broader efforts to address Tampa's extensive water and wastewater infrastructure, much of which dates back to the early 1900s, with a large portion installed in the 1950s and 1960s. City records indicate that some components of the system are nearly a century old. In response to these challenges, the City of Tampa launched its Progressive Infrastructure Plan to Ensure Sustainability (PIPES) in 2019, a multi-billion dollar initiative to modernize the aging systems, committing over $3 billion to upgrades since its inception.

The proactive PIPES program aims to minimize incidents such as the more than 1,200 water main breaks the city responded to in 2018. Recent events, including a contractor-caused water main break that flooded downtown Tampa near Ashley Drive and Whiting Street in July 2024, and a broken water main on North 12th Street that forced its closure through July 2026, underscore the ongoing necessity of infrastructure investment and preventative maintenance.

Motorists traversing West El Prado Boulevard during the affected period are advised to allow for additional travel time or to consider alternative routes to mitigate potential delays.
